Helping the Developers

In a recent article, Marco Battilana wrote about how he ensured his standards-compliant designs remained so after handing them over to a client. His solution was to target the depreciated tags and attributes and style them using BRAT, which made the developer acutely aware that there was some problem behind their WYSIWYG‘d page.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago when I was employed by a company to tidy up front-end code and to design a cleaner looking user interface and I had to come up with a subtle way of steering them in the right direction.

d.Construct 2006

Last Friday (2006-11-08) I was at d.Construct, a web conference held in Brighton. The official tag line was …an affordable, one-day conference aimed at those building the latest generation of web-based applications and discussed …how new technology is transforming the web from a document delivery system into an application platform.

Summary

To summarise, the day included discussions on API’s and web services, tagging and mash-ups with a bit of accessibility and usability thrown in for good measure. But then again, I hate the fact that most answers can be pre-planned. You may as well just hand the interviewer a sheet of paper with them on.

Web Applications on PDAs

A few months ago, the company I work for wanted me to migrate our existing application to PDAs or smartphones. As I’d never developed for this environment before I began to research for it. It isn’t a definitive document but simply lists various ideas and capabilities of handheld devices to operate web applications.
